FON Social Router[1] arrived in the mail earlier this morning. There are two networks, called FON_AP and MyPlace (by default). FON_AP is wide open, and MyPlace uses WPA2-PSK, and has all the goodies like the admin interface.
Of course, I don't have WPA set up. I don't even know if my card will do it. So, I spent a bit of time figuring out how to force it to use WEP. (I know, I know, wep bad wpa good etc).
The router only has one ethernet port, the WAN port. Plug a computer into that, and give it the IP 169.254.255.2, netmask 255.255.255.0. Then open up 169.254.255.1 in your browser. You should see the router's web interface. Hit "Private wifi". It will prompt you for a username and password, which, if you haven't changed it, is admin:admin. Then change settings to your liking, and submit.
My La Fonera reboots randomly every once in a while, causing my connection to drop for a few minutes. Turns out it's overheating. So, I open it up to let out some heat. For good measure, I decided to add a fan. Turns out that a fan from a PII worked nicely. It has little slots on it that are just the right size to fit itself reasonably securely to the bottom half of the Fonera case. The fan is soldered to the power plug in the router, and it sits just over the small heatsink visible in the first picture.
It's ugly and hacky, but it works. (Sorry for the blurry pictures. The only digital camera I own is a hacked CVS camera)
